March 19 - That Science Guy

By Jo McKenzie
On Monday 19th March, 'That Science Guy' David came and entertained the kindy and school students and taught us a lot about the science of sound.
He introduced us to ways of representing the vibrations of air caused by sound including a long spring, a slinky, a Chinese Spitting Bowl, and the "Mexican Wave"

He then told us about 4 groups of musical instruments all based on vibrations.
The Idiophones where the whole instrument vibrates (like a bottle of water),
The Airophones where the air vibrates (like a flute or a clarinet),
The Membranophones where a membrane vibrates (like a drum)
The Chordophones where a string vibrates (like a guitar or violin)

He had lots of homemade musical instruments which were nothing like we had ever seen before!

David kept everyone enthralled with his entertaining style of presentation (as long as you didn't mind getting a little bit wet or being 'hit' by an Air Zooker!)
He ended the show with an outside display of whip-cracking which made a very loud noise. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the show.

McCracken team was the overall highest point earning team, and Tolmer did very well throughout the day.

A big thankyou to Cass Lutze for doing a great job with swimming lessons and donating her own time to support our carnival and pre carnival after school practice. Your efforts are highly appreciated. Thanks also to Sonya Birkin for swimming instruction this year.

I would also like to congratulate those students who took part in the inter-school meet. They did very well against challenging competition from other schools. In particular, our youngest students (sub-junior) came 3rd out of the 6 schools represented.

I would like to thank all of the parents and extended families that attended both carnivals. Your support and encouragement of our students was very positive. In particular, those parents that volunteered as timers, BBQ cooks, transport for heavy equipment, shade structures etc were most appreciated at both carnivals.
Thankyou also to the staff who assisted with organisation and supervision at both carnivals and to the student team captains who assisted in their house bays.

Congratulations to Keenan and Riley J who have been selected to represent our SAPSASA district in the State Swimming Competitions.
