Homework

READING: All children should be encouraged to read every night!
(This could be to their parents/caregivers, to investigate something they are interested
in, or simply for enjoyment.)

No more than 10 - 30 mins should be 'set' by teachers.

WRITING: All children should be encouraged to complete written work in a variety of curriculum areas.

No more than the following limits should be 'set' by teachers.

Rec.-Year 1. voluntary + Reading = 10 mins./ night

Year 2 15 mins/week + = 20 mins / night

Year 3/4 2 x 20 mins + =20 mins./ night

Year 4/5 3 x 20 mins + = 30 mins./ night

Year 5/6 3 x 30 mins + = 30 mins./ night

Year 6/7 4 x 30 mins + = 30 mins./ night

Homework must be relevant to the work students are completing in class. Eg. Homework will not be set for the sake of 'doing something at home'. Most of the time, homework will be set for students who need to complete a specific task that was not completed at school, or a contract or project that involves students to manage their own time as best they can to complete work by a due date.

Children who have genuinely tried to do their best, should be praised and encouraged, even though they may not have completed all the work 'set'.

Children who have not completed 'set' homework to the best of their ability, may be required to complete it (or at least put in their best effort);

  • For no more than half their Morning Recess and/or Lunchtime breaks.

Teachers "Duty of Care" requires that we supervise children with the care which would be considered reasonable by a responsible parent; taking into consideration the age, behaviour, and any other information which is known about the child.

Taking the above information into consideration, arrangements will be made for students to complete homework under varying levels of supervision. These could be:

  • Admin. Time-Out
  • Library/Resource Centre
  • Their classroom
